CONFERENCE AGENDA - 2026 REGION V CRC
Below is the tentative agenda for the conference, this may be updated from time to time. We will also be using the ASHRAE 365 app for people to view the schedule if you’re inclined but there will always be someone from our chapter to help you get to where you need.
FRIDAY TECHNICAL SESSIONS
Lunch will be provided during Technical Sessions 1A/1B. Technical Sessions are included in Friday/Full/Technical Sessions Only Registrations. Promotional flyer can be found here.
Technical Session 1A: Let’s Decarbonize: A Hands-On Building Decarbonization Workshop
11:30AM - 1:00PM, Hyatt Kaiser, lunch included - please note earlier start time
Developed by Amanda Webb, Barry Abramson, Katherine Castiello Jones, and Heather Cheng
Excited to decarbonize? Want to learn more about how to do it? This highly interactive session will provide a hands-on introduction to building decarbonization planning. First, it will introduce decarbonization fundamentals using core concepts from the ASHRAE/USGBC/NYSERDA Guide to Strategic Decarbonization Planning. Then, in small groups, attendees will work together to develop a mock building decarbonization plan using information from an actual building covered by BEPS and preparing to comply. Each group will explore and evaluate strategies to reduce building GHG emissions while considering costs, trigger events, and other key contextual factors. Session attendees should come ready to engage with their peers and get to work!
Technical Session 1B: Retroactive. Resilient. Realistic: The HVAC Retrofit Revolution
12:00PM - 1:00PM, Hyatt Emanuele, lunch included
Presented by Coral Pais, PE, BEMP
In today’s rapidly evolving landscape, where policy and research increasingly shape building retrofit goals, HVAC system design requires revolutionary thinking and a retroactive approach. This session will explore key ASHRAE guidelines that support efficient HVAC retrofits and showcase real-world case studies from both design engineers and contractors. These examples will highlight the complexities involved in selecting and designing HVAC systems and equipment for renovations of existing buildings, the creative opportunities to provide HVAC systems that can adapt to evolving requirements, and the importance of collaboration between engineers and contractors to ensure effective execution and application of such improvements.
Technical Session 2: Weighing the Pig vs. Making it Fly: Improving Energy Performance While Maintaining IEQ Through Retro-Commissioning
1:05PM - 2:05PM, Hyatt Emanuele
Presented by Wade H. Conlan, PE, BCxP, CxA, LEED AP BD+C
A significant portion of the existing building stock must improve its energy performance, and therefore reduce operational carbon emissions, in order to meet net-zero energy and carbon-neutrality goals over the coming decades. Existing facilities are often viewed as energy-intensive; however, substantial performance improvements can be achieved through the retro-commissioning process. This session explores the balance between “weighing the pig” (benchmarking and assessment) and actively implementing system improvements. Real-world laboratory, hospitality and gaming, and university facility projects will be highlighted to demonstrate how retro-commissioning can transform underperforming buildings into high-performing assets.
Technical Session 3: Your Ethics Tool Box: Building a Framework for Ethical Decision Making with Case Studies
2:10PM - 3:10PM
Presented by Julia Timberman, PE
ASHRAE members are often confronted with ethical issues (whether they realize it or not). This session is part of a continuing program under which ASHRAE members engage in an interactive session where participants are presented with multiple ethics cases, discuss the cases in small groups, and then reveal their decisions. Test your "Ethics IQ" against real cases.
