2023-24 ASHRAE Society Theme: Challange Accepted: Tackling the Climate Crisis

Ginger Scoggins, P.E., Fellow ASHRAE, is ASHRAE’s President for the 2023-24 term. Scoggins previously served on the ASHRAE Board of Directors as president-elect, treasurer, vice president and director and regional chair.

For her time and dedication to ASHRAE and the industry, she is the recipient of the Exceptional Service Award and Distinguished Service Award. She chaired the ASHRAE Building Headquarters Ad Hoc committee, leading the Society’s $20 million fully net-zero-energy building renovation project.

Her theme for the 2023-24 ASHRAE Society Year is “Challenge Accepted: Tackling the Climate Crisis.”

“We are living in a climate emergency. Our desire to be more comfortable has brought us to a place where we need to make uncomfortable decisions. We can accept the challenge of our day regarding the impact of our buildings on the climate crises by equipping our members with the knowledge they need to design and renovate buildings to address the greenhouse gas emissions of our industry.”

In addition to her time served on the Board of Directors, Scoggins has served as chair of the Appointments Roadmap Committee, chair of the Members Council, coordinating officer of the Communications Committee, coordinating officer of the Conferences and Exposition Committee, coordinating officer of the Chapter Technology Transfer Committee, coordinating officer of the Honors and Awards Committee, coordinating officer of the Membership Promotion Committee, coordinating officer of the Research Promotion Committee and coordinating officer of the Student Activities Committee. She has also served as the ASHRAE representative to the Technical Advisory Committee of the Kigali Cooling Efficiency Fund, is a member of the United Nations Environment Programme and is a member ASHRAE Task Force for Building Decarbonization, among other Society participation.

Scoggins’ theme highlights the urgency of addressing the climate crisis, examines measures to reduce human impact on the natural environment and offers strategies for making the built environment more resilient and sustainable.

“An understanding of how climate change affects building planning, design, construction and operation is necessary to properly execute projects going forward. ASHRAE is committed to equipping our members with sufficient knowledge and tools, expanding our efforts of designing energy efficient buildings and providing meaningful leadership, action, resources, and advocacy to the global built environment.”

Scoggins has 35 years of experience as a licensed mechanical engineer and is a certified commissioning agent and certified energy manager. She is the president and owner of Engineered Designs, Inc. in Cary, N.C. – a full-service consulting engineering firm – where she works on the design and commissioning of projects ranging from $4 to $90 million in construction cost. 2022-23 ASHRAE Society Theme: Securing our Future

Every year ASHRAE’s Society President establishes their own presidential theme here is this years:

Mehboob’s theme for the 2022-23 ASHRAE Society Year is “Securing Our Future.”

“A meaningful and powerful future will not come to us…we must collectively seek it…create it…SECURE it. And that’s what we’ll do because that’s who we are. It’s in our ASHRAE DNA. We need to be diverse, equitable and inclusive to see, understand and take advantage of what is changing, for our success. The two key prerequisites for ASHRAE’s diversity are: transparency and participation.”

DECEMBER 2021 - ASHRAE Society President Visit

We had a busy day in Cleveland, hosting Mick Schwedler, PE, FASHRAE - current ASHRAE President.
The breakfast meeting with design professionals generated really interesting conversations and feedback, such as how there could be more regional collaboration and ASHRAE training at the CRC events, and how the local chapter can continue to keep the design firms and owners engaged, by communicating the value that ASHRAE provides.

The meeting with local code and government officials highlighted the role that ASHRAE plays in developing standards for the built environment, the balance that one must achieve between health, safety and energy efficiency, and how ASHRAE can continue to advocate (not lobby) for states and local jurisdictions to adopt newer, cost justified standards in their building codes.

His Presidential address to the local chapter highlighted the importance of feeding the roots- technical, personal and grassroots, did resonate with the audience. It was even more special that he could spend time and meet with local distributors and manufacturers at their table top displays.

Dear “Team ASHRAE Cleveland,”

Thank you so much for your kind hospitality, filling the day with engineer, code official and Chapter gatherings, the Cleveland gifts, and especially your service to the Chapter and Members. The time and effort you put in is greatly appreciated – particularly by your Members.

The pictures you sent are fabulous! Thank you for sharing them.

It was an honor to be with you and everyone else in Cleveland. Your planning resulted in significant service to many in the Cleveland area – and value for your Chapter.

I hope the holidays you celebrate are blessed, and your New Year is healthy and prosperous for you and all those close to you.

Please let us know how we can help you continue to be successful and “Feed the roots.”

Best regards,

Mick Schwedler, PE, FASHRAE
